Attack on Titan is a manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. Manga began serialization in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine (monthly manga magazine) on September 9, 2009. An anime adaptation of this manga aired in Japan in 2013. The release of anime saw a boost of popularity for the series. Attack on Titan was a best selling manga in Japan in the first half of 2014 with 8,342,268 copies sold in period while second place, One Piece only sold 4,936,855 copies. It is also a current New York Times best selling manga (Oct 05, 2014).
The story of Attack on Titan revolve around Eren Yeager, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and their friend Armin Arlert. For century, the surviving remnants of humankind have lived behind three concentric rings of walls which protect them from Titans, a humanoid about 3-15 meters tall. The story begin when the wall which protects Eren, Mikasa and armin hometown is breached by Titans and eats Eren mother while he was watching. This drives him to join the military and vowing to kill all Titans and that is the beginning of Eren and his friends adventure.
This is a very good series that has became very famous around the world. For me, the reason I like this manga (haven't watch anime yet) is because of the plot and setting of this manga which is very interesting. However, I don't think that it is that good. In my opinion, it is a good manga but there are many other manga that is as good or better but not as popular as this one. Maybe the popularity of this manga series is from anime which I haven't watch yet, therefore I can't tell if its good or not.
This manga also following typical shōnen storyline in some sense, where boy fight stuff and trying to get stronger. Shōnen manga usually concentrate on action, honor, fighting and heroism. One typical Shōnen manga is 'mecha' or boy and his robot. If we think of it, Attack on Titan might be in 'mecha' genre. Young boy, found out that he can pilot a giant robot (Eren turn into Titan). His robot is more power than normal enemies robot (Eren is stronger than typical Titans). He and his robot look to be the key to turning point in war, but he soon run into special robot which is very strong and have their own special power (Eren facing other Titans shifter (humans who can transform into Titan)).
Another interesting point about Attack on Titan is that it is easy to generalized Titan to anything. Titan VS human can be viewed as strong VS weak. These Titan could be government, mainstream media, political, or anything influential. The point is that Titan can be view as any of these thing, so powerful that we cannot never get rid of them. Similar to normal human in Attack on Titan, they can either succumb to it and accept it as your fate or try to resist it. For example, some Korean think of Titan 'as Japan’s reemerging militarism, as right-wing politicians return to the political stage in Japan’s recent election' or Hong Kong see Titan as powerful businessman and Chinese government that try to control them.
Overall, if we just look solely at Attack on Titan manga, it is a good and very fun manga to read as it had very interesting plot and setting that will make you want to read more and wonder what will happen. Interesting art style, nice storyline and character development. However, if we look at the sells of this manga, I think that this manga is kind of overhyped. Don't get me wrong, it is a great manga but with that huge amount of copies sold, I think it should be better than this.
